A heartwarming moment unfolded at a Rochdale AFC match as a 96-year-old World War Two veteran, Jim Marland, who had his war medals stolen, was surprised with replacements. The incident occurred when Jim was out walking near Rochdale, Greater Manchester, and was attacked by two individuals who snatched his cherished medals from his jacket.
The stolen medals included the 1939/45 War Star, the France/Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the 1939/45 War Medal, all symbols of Jim’s service during the Second World War. The news of the theft garnered significant attention on social media, with a post attracting thousands of views, including that of Major Phil Linehan, a Reservist and military historian.
Moved by Jim’s story, Major Phil Linehan, who also owns a medal mounting company, decided to replace the stolen decorations. Traveling over five hours from Kent, he presented Jim with the original medals on the pitch during half-time at Rochdale’s League Two match against Stevenage. The gesture brought a sense of pride and gratitude to Jim, who was touched by the unexpected act of kindness.
During the presentation, Major Linehan took the opportunity to delve into Jim’s wartime experiences, shedding light on his journey in the Durham Light Infantry during World War Two. Jim’s service took him through various theaters of war, from North Africa to Germany, where he valiantly fought until the end of the conflict in Hamburg.
Aside from the replacement medals, 103 REME, Major Linehan’s unit, also provided Jim with a replacement beret and original cap badges with historical significance, further enriching the sentimental value of the gesture. Jim, who had been wounded in action during his service, expressed his gratitude for the support and kindness shown to him.
Adam Trennery, a former Royal Navy Engineer and member of the AFC Rochdale Veterans Association, played a pivotal role in organizing the event at the football club to reunite Jim with his stolen decorations. The club’s chairman, Simon Gauge, emphasized the community’s support and solidarity in the face of such a despicable crime, highlighting the club’s commitment to uplifting and honoring individuals like Jim.
Rochdale Football Club’s involvement in the event not only brought joy to Jim and his family but also showcased the power of community spirit in restoring a sense of pride and honor to a veteran who had fallen victim to theft. The ceremony at the match against Stevenage was a poignant moment that resonated with all in attendance, reaffirming the importance of recognizing and appreciating the sacrifices made by individuals like Jim.
