Private Francis Fitzpatrick’s medals, including a replica Victoria Cross and a replica South Africa Medal, have been reunited at the National Army Museum. Fitzpatrick, an Irish-born hero, served with the 94th Regiment of Foot and played a significant role in lesser-known Army campaigns in South Africa.
Born in Ireland in 1859, Fitzpatrick enlisted with the 94th Foot at a young age and was involved in the Zulu War of 1879. His unit later faced the Pedi people in eastern Transvaal, where he displayed remarkable bravery, earning him the prestigious Victoria Cross.
Lieutenant-General Sir Garnet Wolseley’s expedition against the Pedi in 1879 led to Fitzpatrick’s heroic act, where he, along with Private Thomas Flawn, rescued a wounded officer amidst enemy attacks. Their valorous efforts earned them both the Victoria Cross.
However, tragedy struck during the Transvaal War when Fitzpatrick was injured and his original medals were lost. Another soldier, possibly intending to sell the medals, took them while Fitzpatrick lay unconscious. Despite being captured by the Boers, Fitzpatrick survived the conflict and received replacements for his lost medals.
After leaving the Army, Fitzpatrick ventured into various occupations, including setting up a stable in Malta and working as a groom in Glasgow. He re-enlisted during the Boer War and continued to serve with dedication, earning further accolades for his contributions.
Although Fitzpatrick’s original medals were found and returned to him, he kept the replacements, which were later inherited by his family. The replicas, along with his original Queen’s South Africa Medal, were sold and eventually acquired by a collector who sought to preserve Fitzpatrick’s legacy.
In a twist of fate, the original Victoria Cross and South Africa Medal were sold to Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Jourdain, who recognized their significance and ensured their authenticity. The medals were reunited with the replicas at the National Army Museum, signifying a poignant conclusion to Fitzpatrick’s remarkable tale of valor and loss.
The story of Private Francis Fitzpatrick’s medals serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers in the line of duty and the enduring legacy of bravery that continues to inspire generations.
