The U.S. Mint is set to release a 2.5-ounce silver medal honoring the Space Force, the newest branch of the U.S. military. Designs for this medal will undergo review by the Commission of Fine Arts and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee before final approval by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. The inclusion of silver medals for the Space Force was authorized by Yellen in August.
The Space Force was established in 2019 under the U.S. Air Force, and the upcoming silver medal will be part of the Armed Services Silver Medals program. Alongside the silver medals, bronze issues are also being produced by the Mint. Previous releases included medals for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard, with the Air Force medal sales experiencing delays but nearing their maximum authorized limit.
The 2.5-ounce silver medals have proven popular, with the Air Force medal nearing its maximum sales limit. The Mint plans to extend the series to include medals for the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps, alongside bronze versions. These medals showcase a Matte Finish and come in different sizes, with the 2.5-ounce silver medals measuring 2 inches in diameter.
Future designs for the Space Force silver medal may incorporate elements from the branch’s seal, possibly in conjunction with the Air Force’s insignia. The Mint’s engraving staff and outside artists will be responsible for executing these designs, which will then be sculpted by the Mint’s artists. The release of the Space Force silver medal is anticipated in 2023, adding to the ongoing series of military branch medals.
As the Mint continues to expand its offerings within the Armed Services Silver Medals program, collectors and enthusiasts can look forward to a diverse range of commemorative pieces. The upcoming release of the Space Force silver medal underscores the Mint’s commitment to honoring the various branches of the U.S. military through these limited edition medals.
With the success of previous releases and the anticipation surrounding the Space Force medal, the Mint’s ongoing medals program is poised to attract continued interest from numismatists and military history enthusiasts alike. Stay tuned for updates on the development and release of the Space Force silver medal as part of this prestigious series.
