Executive Director and Founder of Liberty Academy at the Priory in St. Andrew, Suzanne Williams, recently received the prestigious Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation for Service to Education at a ceremony held at Jamaica House. Williams, who has dedicated her life to enhancing children’s education, expressed her immense joy in witnessing the positive impact education has on young lives. Her passion for education was ignited during her teenage years and has been a driving force throughout her career.
Williams’ journey in education began at 16 when she participated in a volunteer program for the Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy. This experience kindled her interest in the transformative power of education. After pursuing her first degree in Geography in Canada, she returned to Jamaica and embarked on a teaching career that eventually led her to specialize in special education.
Her work as a Research Assistant at the Jamaica Association for the Deaf provided her with a unique perspective on education, particularly in the realm of special needs. Having personal experience with family members who had special needs, Williams felt a deep connection to this field and recognized the gaps in Jamaica’s special education system.
Determined to make a difference, Williams pursued a Master’s degree in Programme Development in Special Education at the University of Toronto. Armed with this knowledge, she returned to Jamaica and delved into teaching while also homeschooling her own children. What started as a small homeschooling initiative in her backyard soon evolved into Liberty Academy, a fully-fledged school catering to children with diverse learning needs.
Through prayer and a strong sense of purpose, Williams founded Liberty Preparatory, which later transformed into Liberty Academy at the Priory. The school’s focus on special education was a natural progression, driven by the needs of the students who sought refuge and support in its nurturing environment.
Today, Liberty Academy stands as a testament to Williams’ unwavering dedication to providing quality education to children, regardless of their learning abilities. The school’s success is not measured solely by academic achievements but also by the spiritual growth and sense of belonging that students experience under Williams’ guidance.
Williams emphasizes the importance of viewing education as a calling rather than just a profession. She believes that genuine love and dedication are essential qualities for educators, as children can discern sincerity and authenticity in their teachers. Despite the challenges she has faced along the way, Williams remains steadfast in her commitment to serving her students with excellence and compassion.
Receiving the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation was a humbling honor for Williams, who attributes her success to divine guidance and support. Her faith in God has been a guiding force in her educational journey, shaping the ethos of Liberty Academy and fostering a culture of acceptance and love among staff and students.
As Williams reflects on her achievements, she encourages aspiring educators to pursue their passion with unwavering dedication and excellence. She believes that the rewards of educating children extend far beyond tangible accolades, offering eternal fulfillment and impact on young lives.
