Historic RAAF helmet donated to Coffs Harbour RSL sub-Branch

Adding a touch of history to the Coffs Harbour RSL sub-Branch's memorabilia collection, Robert Loretan recently donated a historic Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) helmet. This helmet, once worn by Robert during his time as a pilot with the RAAF's 'Roulettes Aerobatic Team' in the 1970s, holds significant value not just as a piece of equipment, but as a symbol of service and sacrifice.

John Lloyd, President of the sub-Branch, expressed his gratitude for the donation, highlighting the importance of such items in preserving military history. The helmet, acquired by Robert during an exchange with the United States Air Force, played a crucial role in the design of pilot gear for the RAAF. Its unique features, tailored fit, and advanced technology showcase the evolution of equipment used by Australian pilots.

The memorabilia collection at the Coffs Harbour RSL sub-Branch is a labor of love, meticulously curated over the years to honor the experiences of local veterans and their connection to the community. Displayed at the C.ex Club on Vernon St, the collection serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by citizens in times of conflict and service.

During the recent ANZAC Day period, the sub-Branch welcomed visits from primary schools in the area, offering students a chance to learn about the historical significance of the items on display. This educational outreach not only honors the past but also ensures that future generations understand and appreciate the contributions of those who served.

The helmet presentation ceremony, held during a regular coffee session for veterans and their families, underscored the camaraderie and support that is fostered within the RSL community. These gatherings provide a space for veterans, both local and visiting, to come together, share stories, and find solidarity among peers who understand their experiences.

Aside from the helmet donation, the sub-Branch also awarded the prize for their ANZAC Day Appeal raffle, a handmade ANZAC quilt crafted by loyal supporter Wendy Riitano. The quilt, a cherished item among members, serves as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices made by past and present servicemen and women.

Proceeds from the raffle contribute to the welfare needs of veterans in the Coffs Coast region, supporting initiatives like visitations to local aged care centers, emergency accommodation, and commemoration events. One such event, the upcoming Middle East Area of Operations Commemoration, highlights the ongoing commitment of the sub-Branch to honoring all those who have served in defense of their country.

As the memorabilia collection continues to grow, each item added serves as a testament to the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of those who have worn the uniform. Through these artifacts, the stories of veterans like Robert and the countless others who have served are preserved for future generations, ensuring that their legacy lives on.
