Australia has taken a significant step by revoking distinguished service medals from senior military officers implicated in alleged war crimes during the Afghanistan conflict. The decision, announced recently, follows the damning 2020 Brereton Report, which uncovered disturbing evidence of Australian Defence Force personnel’s involvement in the unlawful killing of 39 prisoners and civilians.
Defence Minister Richard Marles informed parliament that the move to rescind the medals aligns with the report’s recommendations, particularly emphasizing “command accountability.” While Marles refrained from disclosing the identities or exact number of officers affected, local reports suggest that fewer than 10 individuals were impacted by this decision.
Marles also highlighted ongoing investigations by the Office of the Special Investigator, exploring potential prosecutions against certain ADF personnel. However, he cautioned that these inquiries would likely extend over several years due to the complexity of the cases.
Despite the stain on the ADF’s reputation caused by the actions of a few, Marles acknowledged the vast majority of Australian personnel who served in Afghanistan—more than 26,000 individuals—for their dedication, professionalism, and integrity. The inquiry led by Major General Paul Brereton, spanning four years, did not implicate military high-ranking officials in the reported war crimes. In a separate development last year, former Special Air Service Regiment soldier Oliver Schulz faced charges for the murder of an Afghan man in 2012, marking the first instance of a serving or former ADF member being accused of war crime-related murder.
