Participating in the 2025 Maccabi Games in Pittsburgh, Fox Chapel swimmers Drew and Cameryn Brindza showcased their talent and sportsmanship on an international stage. The Maccabi Games, akin to the Olympics for Jewish teenagers, offered a unique learning experience for the siblings. Cameryn, 16, impressed with six swimming medals, including gold in the 200 back, 100 back, and 400 IM, and silver in the 50 back, 200 fly, and 200 IM. Drew, her brother, secured silver in the 500 free and bronze in the 200 back and 200 IM, while their teammate Matthew Lappin, 14, clinched a bronze in the 200 breaststroke.
Reflecting on her performance, Cameryn highlighted the camaraderie and cultural exchange she experienced with fellow swimmers, including those from Canada. Drew, despite missing club practice due to summer camp, excelled in the backstroke events and found comfort in the 500 free, a race he enjoys. Both siblings appreciated the opportunity to compete in different events and interact with a diverse pool of competitors, a departure from their usual racing routine.
The Jewish Community Center of Pittsburgh spearheaded the Maccabi Games, providing a novel setting for the athletes to reside, dine, and compete at Pitt’s campus. This innovative approach aimed to enhance the overall experience for Jewish teen athletes worldwide, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity. Samantha Cohen, Senior Vice President of JCC Maccabi, emphasized the event’s significance in expanding participation and elevating the games’ impact over its 40-year history.
Cameryn expressed her enthusiasm for the event’s format and facilities, indicating a willingness to participate again. The JCC’s efforts to revamp the games and offer a transformative experience resonated with participants like the Brindza siblings, who valued the exposure to new challenges and connections in a supportive environment.
As Fox Chapel swimmers continue to excel on both local and international platforms, their success underscores the importance of community support and opportunities for young athletes to thrive. The Maccabi Games not only celebrate athletic achievement but also promote cultural exchange and personal growth, leaving a lasting impact on participants like Drew and Cameryn Brindza.
