Glenelg midfielder Luke Partington made history by clinching the R. O Shearman Medal, becoming only the second Tiger to achieve this feat. Partington’s stellar performance earned him 76 votes, edging out Adelaide’s Patrick Wilson and Port Adelaide’s Jack Trengove.
The R. O Shearman Medal, steeped in tradition, is named after the legendary five-time Sturt premiership player Bob Shearman. This prestigious award has seen notable winners like triple Magarey Medallist James Allan, who holds the record with six Shearman Medals.
Partington’s victory marked a significant milestone for Glenelg, with the 22-year-old also securing the Magarey Medal earlier in the year, following in the footsteps of Brett Backwell in 2006. His exceptional form throughout the season was duly recognized by the SANFL coaches, who voted for him in the 5-4-3-2-1 format.
Notably, Partington also claimed the inaugural SANFL Digital Pass Player of the Year award, a testament to his consistency and impact on the field. The Shearman Medal leaderboard, along with the voting process, is regularly featured in the SANFL Budget, adding to the anticipation and excitement surrounding the award.
Reflecting on past winners, the R. O Shearman Honour Roll showcases a rich history of talent and achievement within the SANFL community. From Gavin Colville in 2000 to Nick Liddle in 2018, each recipient has left an indelible mark on the league.
Among the top vote-getters this year were Sturt’s Sam Colquhoun and South’s Abe Davis, highlighting the fierce competition and depth of talent in the league. Joel Cross, a previous Shearman Medal winner, also featured prominently in the voting, underscoring his consistent performance over the years.
As Partington basks in the glory of his dual victories, the SANFL continues to serve as a breeding ground for top-tier talent and a showcase of the best in South Australian football. The league’s commitment to honoring its history and recognizing outstanding individuals like Partington ensures that the legacy of the R. O Shearman Medal lives on.
