Las Cruces is mourning the loss of Sgt. 1st. Class Antonio Rey Rodriguez, a dedicated soldier who tragically lost his life in Afghanistan. The 28-year-old, a native of Las Cruces, had a distinguished military career, having graduated from Mayfield High School in 2009 and then joining the U.S. Army later that year. Rodriguez was serving in a special operation in Afghanistan when the fatal incident occurred in the Nangarhar province.
The attack, which claimed the lives of Rodriguez and another soldier, Javier Gutierrez, left six others wounded. The community is coming together to honor Rodriguez’s memory with a rosary scheduled at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary followed by a funeral mass. The ultimate tribute will be his interment at Arlington National Cemetery on March 3, 2020.
Rodriguez’s dedication to his country was recognized through several military accolades, including the Bronze Star Medal-2, Joint Service Commendation Medal-1, and Expert and Combat Infantryman Badge. Posthumously, he was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), and Meritorious Service Medal.
Remembered fondly as “Rod” by friends, Rodriguez had a passion for spending time with loved ones, including his family and pets. An avid cook, he delighted in preparing gourmet meals for those dear to him. Alongside his wife, Ronaleen, he devoted time to fitness activities, particularly powerlifting and endurance workouts. Rodriguez also found joy in competitive shooting as a member of the United States Pistol Shooting Association.
In the wake of his tragic passing, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by Rodriguez’s best friend, Cody Hunn, to assist with funeral expenses. The outpouring of support from both acquaintances and strangers surpassed the initial fundraising goal, reflecting the community’s solidarity in honoring Rodriguez’s service and sacrifice.
As the Las Cruces community grieves the loss of a hometown hero, the generosity displayed through the crowdfunding campaign serves as a testament to the impact Rodriguez had on those around him. His legacy as a dedicated soldier, loving family member, and passionate individual will endure, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
