The Military Cross (MC) is granted for exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land to all members of any rank in the British Armed Forces. It can also be awarded posthumously.
The George Cross (GC) is the second-highest gallantry award in the UK honours system, recognizing civilian courage and military actions where purely military honours would not normally be granted. It was instituted in 1940 by King George VI during the Blitz to honor acts of civilian bravery.
