NZDF Accepts Urgent Medal Applications for Anzac Day 2025

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is currently accepting urgent applications for military medals to be worn on Anzac Day 2025. The NZDF Personnel Archives and Medals (PAM) unit is responsible for issuing various war, operational, and service medals to both former and current NZDF service members. While adhering to the Privacy Act 2020, PAM also offers guidance on potential medal entitlements for service members and provides information on previously issued medals.

For those seeking to apply for medals to wear on Anzac Day 2025, the deadline for urgent applications is set until Monday, 24 March 2025. It is emphasized that any applications received after this date will follow regular processing timelines and may not be ready in time for Anzac Day. Due to the current backlog of requests, there might be delays in providing decisions within the statutory time frame, but efforts are being made to address this promptly.

In cases where military personnel files of individuals who served in the Home Guard are unavailable due to historical reasons, applicants are encouraged to provide alternative evidence of service, such as official documents or correspondence from that era. It is essential to establish a minimum service period of six months with the New Zealand Army to qualify for a medal.

It is important to note that NZDF PAM does not manage awards, decorations, or medals issued under the NZ Royal Honours system. Information regarding these awards should be sought from the Honours Unit within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Similarly, for foreign awards, except for specific cases like the Pingat Jasa Malaysia, inquiries should be directed to the relevant issuing authority.

To apply for medals, applicants need to complete the Medals application form and submit it along with the required supporting documents. Additionally, individuals eligible for long service awards must meet specific criteria outlined in the NZDF Long Service Awards Regulations 2020, including maintaining good conduct throughout the qualifying service period.

In the event of lost or damaged medals, replacement medals can be requested during the lifetime of current and former NZDF serving members, with the cost covered by the applicant. NZDF PAM facilitates the process of obtaining replacement medals upon receiving a formal request and supporting documentation.

Furthermore, NZDF does not offer services for medal mounting or ribbon bars for former NZDF service members and their families. Individuals seeking these services are advised to explore commercial providers independently.

As the NZDF continues to honor the service and sacrifices of its members, the acceptance of urgent medal applications underscores the significance of recognizing and commemorating the contributions of past and present service personnel on occasions like Anzac Day.
