The attack, which occurred on 19 August 2011, involved two Suicide Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices and armed insurgents targeting the compound.
The assault resulted in casualties among the security guards and staff, with the compound’s defense led by individuals like Hameed Choudhry, who received the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery for his role in resisting the attackers. The bravery displayed during the siege, including the actions of guards like Janga Gurung, Shayam Limbu, Deepak Thapa, and Jeetman Magar, was instrumental in protecting the British Council staff.
Another recipient, Anthony John Trethowan, was recognized for his courageous intervention in disarming a gunman in Yemen in 2007. Trethowan, a Health and Safety Consultant, acted swiftly to assist the wounded and disarm the assailant, demonstrating exceptional bravery and leadership in a dangerous situation.
