Two sisters, Brenda Medway, 93, and Kathleen ‘Kay’ Clement, 101, were brought back together after years of separation, all thanks to a lost military medal and the dedicated efforts of caring staff at HC-One Wales’s Cwrt-Clwydi-Gwyn Care Home in Skewen, Neath.
Brenda, a resident at the care home, had expressed her longing to see her older sister, Kay, whom she believed was residing in another care facility in the Sketty area. Despite initial unsuccessful attempts by the care team to locate Kay, a breakthrough came when senior carer Tomos Lovell decided to extend the search on his own time.
Tomos stumbled upon an article online detailing the story of Kathleen ‘Kay’ Clement, a former Women’s Auxiliary Air Force member during the Second World War, who had recently been reunited with a lost military medal she earned for her mechanical work that supported Britain’s spitfire fighters.
Kay, born in 1924, had served as a mechanic at RAF Loughborough and was awarded a Loyal Service Medal for her wartime contributions. However, she had lost the medal over the years until a replacement was presented to her during a ceremony where she was also honored with the Mayor’s Award.
Upon discovering the connection between Brenda and Kay through the article, staff at the care home arranged a surprise reunion with the help of The Old Vicarage Nursing Home, where Kay resided. Brenda was shown the article and immediately identified her long-lost sister, leading to an emotional and heartwarming reunion.
The sisters, Brenda and Kay, spent precious moments together filled with laughter, fond memories, and shared stories, as if the years of separation had never occurred. The reunion was a touching reminder of the power of family bonds and the importance of reconnecting with loved ones.
Tomos, reflecting on the reunion, emphasized the significance of person-centered care and the joy it brings in facilitating such reunions. The entire care team was inspired by the sisters’ reunion and committed to supporting their continued connection through regular visits and shared moments.
The heartwarming story of Brenda and Kay serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring bonds of family and the profound impact of small gestures in reuniting loved ones. It showcases the dedication of care staff in going above and beyond to make meaningful connections and create lasting memories for those in their care.
