The Waterloo Medal was first announced in the London Gazette on April 23, 1816, following a Memorandum from Horse Guards on March 10, 1816, by the Prince Regent. It was awarded to every Officer, Non-Commissioned Officer, and Soldier of the British Army who participated in the battles of Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo in June 1815. Designed by Thomas Wyon, it was the first medal issued by the British Government to all soldiers present at an action, with a total of 39,000 medals awarded. The reverse of the medal features the seated figure of Victory, with ‘WELLINGTON’ and ‘WATERLOO’ inscribed below, and the date ‘JUNE 18 1815’.
What we found about this product:
We are truly impressed by the historical significance and symbolism of the Waterloo Medal. As the first campaign medal awarded to all soldiers present at an action, this medal stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who fought in the Battle of Waterloo. The elegant design by Thomas Wyon captures the essence of victory and honors the memory of those who fought in this historic battle. One small improvement could be to include more detailed information on the design competition that led to the creation of this prestigious medal.
