US Army Introduces C and R Devices for Combat Recognition

In a recent development, the United States Army has introduced new combat-related devices to be worn on decorations. While the valor V device has been in use for decades, the Army has now added the C and R devices, symbolizing combat and remote contributions, respectively. These changes were detailed in the Military Personnel Message 17-095, released on March 15.

Lt. Col. R. Arron Lummer, the chief of Awards and Decorations Branch, explained the distinction between the V and C devices. The V device signifies combat heroism in a specific instance, while the C device recognizes service or achievement under combat conditions over a period, such as during a deployment in a combat zone. The intent is to highlight awards earned in combat scenarios.

For instance, the Army Commendation Medal can now be adorned with a C device to distinguish service or achievement in combat, whereas the Bronze Star Medal does not require a C device as it inherently acknowledges combat service. The criteria for earning a C device involve being in an active combat area and exposed to hostile action or engaged in combat-related activities.

On the other hand, the remote R device acknowledges a Soldier’s remote but direct contribution to combat operations. This could include actions like operating unmanned aerial systems to deliver ordnance on high-value targets from a distance. The key consideration for awarding the R device is whether the Soldier’s actions outside the combat zone directly impacted combat operations.

Guidelines for wearing the C and R devices closely mirror those for the V device. The color, size, and font of the new devices match the existing V device. These devices are typically worn with awards like the Army Commendation Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and others, depending on the nature of the recognition.

Regarding precedence, the V device holds the highest rank, followed by the C and then the R device. A Soldier cannot receive multiple devices for the same act of service or achievement. These changes are part of the commander’s program, aimed at recognizing extraordinary service related to combat and enhancing morale within the ranks.

One common query surrounding the new devices is their retroactive application. The C and R devices are retroactive only to Jan. 7, 2016, as authorized by the Secretary of Defense. Awards approved before this date are not eligible for the new devices. While formal requests for C and R devices had not been received as of March 21, it is expected that such requests will be forthcoming.

Overall, the introduction of the C and R devices reflects a broader effort within the Army to ensure that service members are appropriately recognized for their contributions in combat and remote operations. These changes align the awards system with the evolving nature of military operations and the diverse roles played by Soldiers in modern conflicts.
