Retired United States Air Force Maj. John Postgate reflects on his military career with a sense of liveliness, emphasizing the variety of aircraft he flew and the numerous missions he undertook. However, it was his role as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) during the Vietnam War that left an indelible mark on his service. Postgate flew over 475 missions in Vietnam, coordinating air strikes and working closely with ground units amidst enemy fire, an experience that earned him multiple commendations.
Postgate’s time as an airborne FAC was not without peril. Flying low in a Cessna O-1 Bird Dog, he often faced direct enemy fire, resulting in his aircraft being hit multiple times. One particular mission saw his plane’s wing shredded by bullets, leaving him injured but alive. Despite the dangers, Postgate’s bravery was recognized with accolades such as the Purple Heart, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, and numerous other awards for his valor and service.
Transitioning to fighter aircraft during his second tour, Postgate flew an additional 303 combat missions in an F-100 Super Sabre. His post-Vietnam career saw him training young pilots before retiring as a major in 1975. Now residing in the Coastal Bend, Postgate looks back on his military journey with gratitude, recounting the thrill of flying at supersonic speeds, engaging in combat, and the camaraderie shared with fellow service members.
Postgate’s story is set to be featured in an upcoming Purple Heart exhibit at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, honoring local recipients of this prestigious military decoration. The exhibit aims to preserve and share the stories of Purple Heart veterans from the Coastal Bend, providing a platform for visitors to learn about the sacrifices and experiences of these heroes across different conflicts.
Organizers of the exhibit are working diligently on its design and layout, incorporating interactive kiosks to engage visitors and highlight the bravery of Purple Heart recipients throughout history. The display will rotate to showcase veterans from various eras, ensuring that their legacies endure for future generations. Community involvement is encouraged, with individuals invited to contribute their Purple Heart stories for inclusion in the exhibit.
Veterans like Postgate serve as a testament to the courage and dedication of those who have worn the uniform, their stories echoing through history as a reminder of the sacrifices made in service of their country. The Purple Heart exhibit stands as a tribute to these individuals, ensuring that their valor and heroism are never forgotten.
