The Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 Medal Design Competition has been officially launched, inviting creators worldwide to submit their designs for the front face of the medals to be awarded at the Games.
The competition offers participants the opportunity to be part of Olympic history by contributing their creative designs, while the reverse side of the medal will showcase elements of Korean culture and the YOG emblem, designed by the Gangwon 2024 YOG Organising Committee.
Entries for the competition will be accepted until 8 March 2023, with the winner set to be announced by the end of March 2023.
Aside from the honor of having their design adorn the medals awarded at Gangwon 2024, the winning designer will receive a round-trip for two to the Games, including access to the Opening Ceremony and various sports events, along with a complete set of medals and other rewards.
Furthermore, prizes await the second and third-placed designs in the competition, adding an extra layer of excitement for all participants.
The Youth Olympic Games Medal Design Competition has a rich history, starting before the Singapore 2010 edition, aiming to engage the creative minds of young individuals globally.
Zakea Page, the winner of the Lausanne 2020 competition, will be part of the judging panel for the Gangwon 2024 event, offering valuable insights and advice to aspiring entrants.
Page emphasized the importance of research, suggesting that prospective designers explore previous Games’ designs and various sporting events to create a fresh and innovative vision for the medals.
He also encouraged incorporating Olympic values into the designs and symbolizing the essence of the upcoming Games, highlighting the significance of an Olympic medal as the pinnacle of achievement for athletes.
Aspiring designers were advised to break away from recent design trends, such as circular medals seen in Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022, and instead, explore new directions to make their designs stand out.
Through the Medal Design Competition, talented individuals have the chance to leave a lasting mark on the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 and contribute to the rich tapestry of Olympic history with their creative interpretations.
With the deadline fast approaching, participants are urged to channel their creativity, passion for sports, and Olympic spirit into their designs to craft unique and memorable medals that will inspire and awe athletes and spectators alike at the Games.
