Former President Donald Trump faced criticism for his remarks about the Medal of Honor recipients during an event at his Bedminster, New Jersey estate. Trump compared the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor, stating that the former was “much better” because it is awarded to civilians in good health compared to soldiers who receive the Medal of Honor posthumously or when in critical condition.

During the event, Trump praised Miriam Adelson, a major donor and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He highlighted her achievements as a committed doctor, philanthropist, and humanitarian. Trump’s comments drew sharp rebuke from a prominent national veterans group leader who criticized the former president’s remarks as “asinine” and disrespectful to the sacrifices made by military personnel.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars National Commander expressed concerns about Trump’s understanding of the significance of the Medal of Honor and questioned his suitability as a potential commander-in-chief. The Kamala Harris campaign and progressive veterans group VoteVets also condemned Trump’s comments, accusing him of lacking respect for veterans and their sacrifices.
In response to the backlash, the Trump campaign clarified that the former president was referring to the emotional impact of awarding the Medal of Honor, not diminishing its value or the actions of servicemembers. Trump’s running mate, Marine veteran JD Vance, defended him, emphasizing Trump’s support for veterans and downplaying the controversy surrounding his remarks.
Trump’s comments about the military have been a recurring source of controversy, with previous instances including criticism of Senator John McCain’s war hero status and allegations reported by The Atlantic in 2020 that Trump had disparaged fallen soldiers. Despite positioning himself as a supporter of the military and highlighting his efforts to strengthen the armed forces during his presidency, Trump’s remarks have often been met with criticism and condemnation.

During the event in Bedminster, Trump also addressed issues of antisemitism, highlighting the importance of the Jewish vote and making claims about Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris. His remarks about Jewish voters and loyalty to Israel were met with criticism for perpetuating dual loyalty stereotypes, which have been deemed antisemitic.
Trump’s comments at the event reignited debates about his approach to military matters, veterans’ issues, and his rhetoric on sensitive topics like antisemitism. The controversy surrounding his comparison of civilian awards and military honors further fueled discussions about his understanding of and respect for the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.
